  By any measure, admitting defeat in the St. Lawrence in September was a blow to the Royal Canadian Navy and to the government. Both took intense heat in Parliament and in the media for their inability to keep the nation’s main artery open in the face of enemy attack. It was our unofficial national flag on July 4, and it remained the unofficial national flag and ensign of the Navy until June when the Continental Congress authorized the Stars and Stripes. PAGE 3.

  The “Battle in the St. Lawrence” should be considered a part of a proud Canadian naval heritage and remembered as a distinct part of World War II history where “local” citizens were directly involved not just as victims but, as participants and their contributions were of the utmost importance to the Allied war effort and the survival. The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Archives collects records that document the history of Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma. Our records date from to the present and include several collections that have been designated as Cultural Property by the Federal Government for their outstanding significance and national importance.
