Some sideline like the Worrall or the exchange Ruy Lopez are each full books on their own. Secondly, the subtleties are highly abstract and difficult to explain in a book. I think Karpov could write a book similar to his book on the English opening where he doesn't try to cover variations but instead just annotates a bunch of relevant GM games.       Best Ruy Lopez Book. Apathy #1 Hi, I'm interested in learning the Ruy Lopez opening and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations towards the best book. I'm an intermediate chess player, but I'm fairly new to the Ruy Lopez. I'm looking for a book that is somewhat beginner friendly and will explain concepts and the reasoning. The Ruy Lopez Revisited is a high-class opening book which cannot really be faulted. Primarily, of course, it is intended for Black players who meet the Ruy Lopez. If you fit into this category, it will give you about four defences, all somewhat different in character, which should yield winning chances against a less well prepared opponent.

John Emms’ Book “First Steps: 1.e4 e5” is a good book and covers some mainlines of the Ruy Lopez. He recommends 3 a6 for low-level players like myself playing the Black side, followed by: A) 6 dxc6 Bg4 B) 4 Nf6 b5 3 Bc5. In 'The Ruy Lopez: A Guide for Black' we argue that in the Ruy Lopez you quite early should take on the mainlines as the sidelines are easier to handle when you understand what's going on in the critical mainlines.

In his preface to 'The Ruy Lopez Revisited', Sokolov quite convincingly argues for the opposite view.
